01/06/2008 - TRAVL Recommended by TfL
TRAVL is now recommended by TfL for use in preparing/reviewing both Transport Assessments and Travel Plans. The latest (March 2008) TfL Guidance for Workplace Travel Planning for Developments establishes a Travel Plan Protocol for London based on three key elements:

- the Guidance for Workplace Travel Planning for Development
- the TRAVL trip forecasting database that stores monitoring information
- the iTRACE project and data management tool for travel plan sites across London

The Guidance requires that independent monitoring of travel plans should be undertaken as part of planning conditions for a development. The monitoring is to be undertaken using the TRAVL standard survey methodology and the information stored in the TRAVL database with results fed into iTRACE. Boroughs, consultants and site managers can commission the monitoring surveys direct from TRAVL or from one of the TRAVL-approved Independent Fieldwork Contractors; details of these Contractors are kept on the TRAVL website.

TfL issued residential and workplace travel planning guidance documents in March 2008. Travel plans are key management tools for implementing transport solutions highlighted by Transport Assessments (TA) for new developments.

These travel planning guidance documents should be used by developers and their agents in creating a residential/workplace travel plan for a new development that will be considered by the local planning authority and the Mayor of London. The guidance should also be used by planning officers at local and regional levels.

A copy of the guidance is available at the 'Publications' area of the website.

Contact Louise Smith for details of how you can access the TRAVL database and how you can achieve the monitoring surveys.
